A great review of Dub Rascals Volume 1 on new music retail partner website, Indie-CDs.com - a musician-owned venture based in Australia that sells and promotes independent music.
DUB RASCALS – VOLUME 1
Dub Rascals are a Queensland-based collective of creative DJs,
producers and electronic tweakers who share a bass- driven passion for
all things Dub. They are all artists involved in the independent label
Little Rascal Records, and this compilation includes collaborations
from label-mates Jerry Mane, Spiral Soundsystem and Souljam, with guest
musicians providing flute and horns.
If you like contemporary electronic dub, with plenty of deep bass and
squelchy bleepy textures, you will enjoy this collection. There is a
mix of styles ranging from jazzy ambient, pure electro dub, skank and
touches of breakbeat, and for local independent product the quality of
sounds here is excellent.
The first four tracks are like easing into a hot tub – deep immersion
in grooves with a more ambient atmosphere, the beats are still there
but the overall texture is smooth. On ‘Sizzled Dub’ Leeroy the Horns
provides horn sounds that glide over the ambient squelch and add a
silky jazz coating. ‘Amigos Dub’ features a classic subsonic bass riff
and the groove prowls with an edge of menace.
The vibe picks up with ‘Skankin It’, a racey piece with a flatout
bassline and a hard cracking snare beat that pushes it along. ‘Break
It’ is a slow phat growl with a heavy breakbeat slam that hits like a
sledgehammer. The reverb-laden ‘Infinity Dub’ is less aggressive and
reminds me of the dub soundscapes created by Bill Laswell. ‘The Baba
Experiment’ squeaks and bleeps through a few mutations, driven by an
industrial electro breakbeat underbelly, softened at first with samples
of some kind of Asian string instrument. ‘Cholic-Aholic’ by Pickle is
heavily electro, silver machine music for dub androids, while ‘Scary
Dub’ has an organic tribal pulse and a dark intensity. The closing
track ‘Full Moon’ is a beatless ambient soundscape featuring the drones
of gongs and electronic sounds under the breathy flute improvisations
of Jessy Sully.
This is a diverse selection of dub inspired sounds of high quality,
with a feast of textures for the ears and moods that travel from mellow
to intense while remaing consistently listenable. A great local effort.
