Little Rascal at Kuranda Roots

May 31st, 2008 by 'little rascal'

The ‘little rascal’ will be playing on the dub stage at this years Kuranda Roots Festival. Last year was the first dubstep dj set by ‘little rascal’ and probably by anyone in FNQ and it went down a treat with punters. The last year has seen ‘little rascal’ fully explore the genre through his deejaying and studio productions and this will all come together in a very basswise set at this years festival. Little Rascal will be accompanied by fellow ‘little rascal’, Symonard on percussion and will open up the dub stage at 3pm. The dub stage is bound to be a ripper with other local, Brisbane and international artists playing the stage.

Dub Stage - Kuranda Roots Festival 2008
3-4.30pm - Little Rascal
4.30 - 6pm - Ombudsman
6 - 7.30pm - Apex & Quinzalez
7.30 - 9pm - Billy Dread

Let’s pulp it once and for all..

May 31st, 2008 by 'little rascal'

All those pundits out there who have been saying construction of the Gunns pulp mill is a foregone conclusion obviously forgot to tell you. ANZ has pulled out of financing the controversial project. Congratulations - this is a major victory and our first corporate win!

Premier of Tasmania, Paul Lennon, has also quit largely due to his unpopular and relentless pursuit of the mill - the project is on a knife’s edge, but the battle is not over. We must act decisively and urgently to finally sink this mill as Gunns desperately searches for political and financial backers.

That’s why we’re planning two full-page newspaper ads - one in the Financial Review to definitively warn off any other potential financiers, and one in Tasmania’s Mercury to tell the new Premier to distance himself from the old. Click here to see these arresting ads and chip in to get them in print:
www.getup.org.au/campaign/PulpedOnceAndForAll

This campaign could go either way - we need to act quickly. Getting ANZ, Gunns’ banker for over 20 years, to withdraw from its plans to fund the mill was an amazing achievement. Not only does this put the pulp mill project in serious jeopardy, it also sends a clear message to all other potential financiers considering financing the mill.

But Gunns have been busy approaching other banks to step into ANZ’s shoes - we need to let them know that financing the mill is risky business, and the public won’t let them off the hook. That’s why we’re putting it in the paper they read each day. We’ve booked the ads, we just need your help in paying for them.

If we raise $15,000 we’ll run the Mercury ad, if we raise $40,000 we’ll run the FInancial Review ad. If we raise $55,000 - we’ll run both:

www.getup.org.au/campaign/PulpedOnceAndForAll

That’s people power in action - all the might and muscle of a big corporation like Gunns can’t match the collective concerns of the people when we all chip in together. This last act on your part might just stop this mill before the bulldozers move in and this chance is lost forever.

Few thought we had much chance of convincing ANZ to do the right thing. They were wrong. Let’s prove once and for all that a united people’s movement can match the might of big corporations and politicians who stand in the way: let’s finally stop this pulp mill. Click here to make a contribution.

Thanks for all that you do,
The GetUp team

Dub In Tha Pub 19

May 12th, 2008 by 'little rascal'

Dub In Tha Pub 19
This months show is bound to be a ripper with a bunch of fresh talent gracing the decks and dub machines accompanied by soulful reggae band Dabas.

Starting the night is local producer Bent Intent. Bent Intent is Pete Blay from Cairns. Pete’s involvement in the electronic scene began in 1997, djing and promoting events along the eastcoast of AUS..In the last year his focus has turned to production, beginning his new chill/downtempo project - ‘Bent Intent’. Incorporating open soundscapes and laidback grooves, combining involving soundscapes with sneaky rhythms, accoustic elements and evolving synthesis - Bent Intent follows the ‘less is more approach’, revelling in the spaces in between…

Followed by Bent Intent will be Deadly Creature, whom played back to back with Mokoto at the last Dub In Tha Pub, this will be Deadly Creature’s debut set at the popular gig. Her worldy dub best reflects her soul:
music, soul, performance, fire, aerials, mixing, production, earth, vision, experience, truth & love.

All reggae and ready to roll will be emerging local live reggae band, Dabas.
Dabas is the creation of Torres Strait Islander musician and songwriter Waipila Tikak Sabadi Kerry (Soccer), with skankin’ keys and backing vocals coming from younger brothers Godfrey and Suwaku and the rhythm section covered by Chris Pardey on drums and the ‘little rascal’ on bass. Dabas is straight up Aussie roots reggae. Soccer writes soulful reggae music and has a mighty presence, his vocals are rich and warm and his musicianship comes naturally. Dabas songs reflect moments in life, love, family and culture.

Last but not least, and to take out the night with deep basswise dubstep will be local girl Aimee making her Dub In Tha Pub debut and adding another fine feme dub ingredient to a great selection of players for what is bound to be a entertaining night for local and visiting Dub and Music fans alike!!!

New Spiral Soundsystem tracks at myspace.com

May 12th, 2008 by 'little rascal'

Heya folks - have uploaded 4 new Spiral Soundsystem tracks. The tracks are in a variety of dubwise and dubstep styles. The track - A Dubstep Reason is a free download. Check em out and enjoy! Anyways, the tracks arn’t too shabby, i know their not absolute winners, but a good start. any feedback would be much appreciated…
www.myspace.com/spiralsounds
tracks:
A Dubstep Reason - this track is mostly built from samples from a recent Computer Music Magazine issue dedicated to the new Reason 4 music making software, although i built it in Reason 3. This software is awesome and im learning and loving it more every time i use it…I expect to hear these samples used in other great dubstep songs soon!!

TV Beats - this track was started late last year and features my friend Jamie playing his Berimbau (traditional Brazilian instrument used in Capoeira). There is another version of this track with vocals from local Murri MCs, Fox and CBreeze called Creep Up To You.

Steppa - this track was also started around the same time as TV Beats. I was trying to get that Dancehall , steppa kinda beat…It features a speech by Dr. Steven Greer, founder of the Disclosure Project. The Disclosure Project is a nonprofit research project working to fully disclose the facts about UFOs, extraterrestrial intelligence, and classified advanced energy and propulsion systems. We have over 400 government, military, and intelligence community witnesses testifying to their direct, personal, first hand experience with UFOs, ETs, ET technology, and the cover-up that keeps this information secret. www.disclosureproject.com

Dubber BBB_BT - this track uses a layered synth bassline built in Reason 3 on three of its Subtracktor synths rather than my usual recorded ‘rascal’ bassline. I used this track to learn how to get that ‘wub wub’ dubstep bass sound, following a tutorial i found online. This track also has a speech taken from the Disclosure Project.

Gear Used: Mega Peavy Max700 Bass Amp , Hartke Bass Attack pedal, Electro Harmonix Bass Micro-Synthesizer pedal, Roland TD-6V Electronic drumkit, Roland SP-404 sampler, Alesis Firwire mixer/recorder, Cubase LE, Reason 3 (all its bells and whistles), Reaper, various plugins, izotope Ozone 2,
Monitors: JBL 6208 Bi-amplified studio monitors, Bose AcousticMax Cube System, Akai SW-157s, Sony APM 1170s .

Kuranda Roots Festival

May 10th, 2008 by 'little rascal'

The Far North’s premier roots festival returns this year with another diverse National line up and International guests.

Kuranda Roots, held at the stunning Kuranda Amphitheatre, features a strong line up of local, interstate and NZ acts and yet stays true to its reputation as an affordable community and family event.

The festival is the brainchild of ex-Kuranda local Morgyn Quinn, owner of Brisbane music label Rudekat Records and Cairns arts/music producers The House Of Falcon. In turn, a large local crew from the FNQ arts and music community support the event.

In the words of the Morgyn, “Kuranda Roots is about bringing together the diverse forms of Roots Music including Soul, Reggae, Dub, Dancehall, World and Blues and creating a world class bill of cutting edge entertainment. We are also committed to developing the skills and abilities of local artists.”

Kuranda has a long and colourful history of roots music, and the amphitheatre is one of the most critical and beautiful outdoor live music venues in the country. Last years festival left punters hungry for more, and the 2008 program promises to deliver some great musical surprises.

The program features many local indigenous artists and acts as a showcase event for the great diversity of talent across the Far North.

Feature acts include Olmecha Supreme (NZ), The Nomad (NZ), Fyah Walk (Byron), Dubmarine (Bris), Zennith (Kuranda), Mistalaneous (Bris), Mystic beats (Byron), Rudekat Soundsystem (Bris and many more.

Kuranda Roots is an all ages licensed event. Tickets go on sale May 4th from Ticketlink, www.ticketlink.com.au 07-4031-9555 and funky Cairns shops Tastey, Shiva Moon and Shi Sha.

Check www.kurandaroots.com for more information.

Climate Action Now!

May 7th, 2008 by 'little rascal'

Dear friends,

Something very troubling is happening right now in Canberra, as our pollies put the final touches on next week’s Budget. It only became clear to us while delivering your People’s Budget Submission - the halls of Parliament are crawling with lobbyists from the powerful and well-resourced polluting industries, using their industrial muscle to aggressively argue against climate change action.

We urgently need an active people’s movement to counter the largest and best-funded lobby in Australia. Next Thursday, the Government will meet with environment groups to discuss climate change solutions. We want tens of thousands of signatures to bring to the table, calling for emissions to begin declining by 2010, and be cut in half by 2020. Nothing less will do.

Will your signature be one of those countering the polluters’ push for short-term profit?

www.getup.org.au/campaign/ClimateActionNow/340

All the polluting industries have combined their resources to trump the will of the people: coal, aluminum, cement, electricity generators, mining, and many more. But our politicians work for us - they need to set targets and pass laws that reduce emissions, not reward polluters.

We are much closer to a crisis tipping point than previously thought. It’s now possible that there will be no Arctic summer ice by 2013, 90 years earlier than IPCC predictions. With existing projections being viewed as the minimum changes we can expect, Australia must adopt a science-based emissions reduction target - and nurture a green economy with green jobs to get us there.

Our economic prosperity and our environment depends on it, and that depends on our politicians being willing and able to resist the powerful self-interests of the polluter lobby. Help swing the debate back in favour of the people, by signing this urgent petition today, before next week’s meeting:

www.getup.org.au/campaign/ClimateActionNow/340

The polluter lobby must not set the terms of the debate around climate solutions. We know that the costs of inaction are catastrophic and will affect every aspect of our economy and our lives. Kevin Rudd is making decisions this year that could help avoid that - but only if you demand it. He needs you to let him know you expect corporate greed to not trump climate need.

Thanks for being a part of the solution,
The GetUp team

The Orion Project

May 3rd, 2008 by 'little rascal'

The Orion Project is a non-profit foundation created to transform the current energy, environmental and social crisis into a world of sustainability and Enlightened Abundance.

Technological progress in the areas of advanced physics and electromagnetic systems, if appropriately supported, will enable humanity to live on the Earth with a minimal footprint with genuine long-term sustainability.

For over 100 years, these advanced concepts in energy generation have either been ignored or actively suppressed due to the power of fossil-fuel based economic and industrial interests.

Get involved, show your support, donate and/or do some of your own research at: http://www.theorionproject.org
