Liquid Architecture 10: Festival of Sound Arts will be a landmark occasion for the festival and for sound culture in Australia.
Celebrating its tenth consecutive year, the Liquid Architecture sound festival returns to Cairns with an exciting program of contemporary sound arts. With a decade of experience to draw upon, the diverse program features live events and installations showcasing the highest quality sound work in an intense focused listening environment, privileging our most unsung sense, listening.
The breadth of diversity of artists and artistic practices includes meticulous recorded work, spontaneous improvised instrument performance, new sound for screen work, radical uses of digital technology, inventive self-made sound making devices, historically informed practices, and established artists appearing alongside emerging artists.
The Cairns program features the vibrant line-up of Perlonex (Ger), Soddell/Caddy (Melb) and Submerge 3 (Return Return, Nigel Perera & Bitcloud).
The electro-acoustic trio Perlonex was founded in late 1998 and has performed and toured in Europe and North America extensively since then. Ranging from prominent contemporary music festivals to underground noise/punk clubs, from art galleries to obscure improv backrooms the wide variety of venues they have played marks out the musical spectrum of the group.
Through the interplay and friction of gradually shifting layers of sound, sonic interferences, interwoven loops and hidden repetitive structures Perlonex is plumbing the depth of a rather complex sound material.
Venue: Crate59 Gallery, 59 Sheridan St, Cairns,

Gunns has taken its search for a joint partner for the native forest-destroying pulp mill international.
Australia’s largest woodchipping company has said it intends to make an announcement on who will be the joint venture partner for the pulp mill this month.
We now know that Swedish pulp and paper company Södra is considering becoming a partner with Gunns Ltd to build its controversial mill.
Together we helped ensure Gunns’ own banker, ANZ, wouldn’t fund the pulp mill.
Now we need to take urgent action to make sure Södra doesn’t sign off on the destruction of Tasmania’s world-class, carbon-rich native forests.
Any organisation considering being involved in Gunns’ pulp mill needs to be aware that they will be supporting a project which is opposed by the majority of Australians, as well as people around the world who want a safe climate and a healthy environment.
We urgently need to get as many messages to Mr Brodén as possible to ensure he understands this is the most strongly opposed project in Australia.

Produced by Madsickill aka Dub Terminator
Madsickill AKA The Dub terminator is based in the north island of New Zealand south pacific ocean planet earth. An eclectic sound bundle of roots influenced music the Madsickill/Dub terminator has been known to dabble in such genres as Dub,Reggae, Dub-step, hip hop and drum & bass. Coming from a musical back ground he became familiar with playing guitars synths , drum machines and the MPC & from an early age played in bands of many different genres and would use these skills in his future sound experimentation’s. In his early teens he was sent to live in a bush hut situated on a mountain on the edge of a forest in the coromandel in the north island of new zealand. He found himself miles away from anywhere there was nothing to do but jam all day. It was here the Dub terminators path became clear that his mission in life was not to create music from a commercial perspective but to create underground music to nod ya head too. MADSICKILL has been producing beats for over 12 years, contributing to many projects, T.v. sounds tracks, advertising jingles, making albums, pressing drum & bass records etc, bringing him together with a variety of artists of different styles, including MC Mana, Rhombus, Commodores member Ronald LePread, DJ Substance, status Kaya, New technology division & of corse J.J. Hunt the second founding member of the to be live performance dub terminating machine set up in 2007 as a launching platform for Mr Madsickills Dub productions ‘The Retainers’.
‘The Retainers’ soon evolved into a unique Aotearoa style of Funk infused Dub, Roots and Hip hop bass heavy sound bringing a fresh sound to the ears of dub fans in clubs, festivals & cyberspace. The creative force behind The Retainers are cousins Christian McLay (MADSICKILL) and Jeremy Hunt. They have been making music together in the Auckland region of New Zealand since 2000. Producer Christian McLay (Madsickill) steps up as Beat maker, lead vocalist and plays keyboards and guitar, along with other instruments that are incorporated into his unique beats and Retainers live shows. Cousin Jeremy Hunt who holds it down on the bass guitar when the band performs live, he also has a hand in creating some of the tracks for The Retainers. After living in London and travelling Europe and Peru, Jeremy returned to New Zealand at the beginning of 2006 to hook up with cousin Chris in developing ideas for dubbed out, funky, innovative rhythms. Karl Smith, a long time friend, joined the line up in late 2007 as co-guitarist and back-up vocalist, building the rhythm section for the live act and adding that extra bit to the Retainers live shows.
Now pushing on, Mr Madsickill has directed the first Retainers music video ‘Rise up’, an Aotearoa dub/hip hop pleaser ready for the air waves featuring on the ‘1000% mad music’ release coming out on Little Rascal Records!! Retainers & LRR will be spreading the positive vibes by making 5 of their freshest Tracks available on free download from the LRR website. The retainers will continue to move forward with their kiwi do-it-yourself approach to making music with the aim to inspire young musicians and artists to take control and get their stuff out there, no matter what. Mr Madsickill is all about the hook ups when it comes to making music. He’s constantly on a mission Hooking producers & MC’s up beats just so others can have the experience of making a ‘dope track’ .
